Weekend forecast says highs in the 30s and a good chance for snow.

Low 80s Saturday in South Jersey, but dropping fast in the days after that. Probably the same system getting here a few days later.

Got up yesterday to very frosty grass -- I think our first real frost, about a month later than historical average. Nights have been cold, days moderate. But when it's raining, it's starting to look like November. Gray, dank, scraggly. Hunting season, oh yay.

Low 50's/high 40's with partial sun, some rain, and occassional golf.

I note the GOP "moderates" crumbled easily (again), and Rep Mike Johnson (insurrection fascist-LA) is now Speaker of the House.

God help us.

Under the headline The GOP rebukes Gaetz and the ‘chaos caucus.’ Then it rewards them. this is one of my gift links:

Shortly before Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) was elected speaker after more than three weeks of a House in limbo, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) did something that would seem both ungracious and unhelpful: He went on Stephen K. Bannon’s podcast and declared victory. He said the effort he had led to oust Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), a move that earned him extensive derision from many colleagues, was paying off.

“If you don’t think that moving from Kevin McCarthy to MAGA Mike Johnson shows the ascendance of this movement and where the power in the Republican Party truly lies, then you’re not paying attention,” Gaetz said.

Gaetz was just stating facts. The hard right won the day.

But the fact that the ringleader of the effort felt comfortable rubbing that in his colleagues’ faces without fear — shortly before the House Republican Conference went on to vote unanimously for his favored outcome — reinforces how the party has allowed the incentive structure to fester, leading to this mess.

Christ almighty (in a manner of speaking).

I have a request for a humorous cartoon that needs color to work. Not a chance I'm going to try that other than digitally, where painting mistakes can just be deleted. I've done some background skimming about the software I used for my last drawing. It's clearly going to be one of those small hells you go through while you figure out how to make the software do this or that.

More from the WaPo: Alexandra Petri's opinion piece today is headlined In a total betrayal of principle, Mike Johnson accepts election results

Stay safe, JanieM.

bobbyp -- thank you. I am maybe 25 miles from Lewiston. Gutted, but probably safe.

Despite a strong gun/hunting culture in this state, we had been spared this insanity up to now.

............

Not to implicate hunting at all....just that there are a lot of guns around, and people are familiar with them and somewhat take them for granted. But -- assault rifles are not part of hunting culture. They shouldn't be part of anyone's "culture" for crying out loud.

Crying period.

Oh, damn, damn damn damn. JanieM, I'm glad to hear you're safe. Please stay that way.

Sorry this is happening at all, but especially sorry that it is happening in your neck of the woods, Janie.

I live less than two miles from Pulse. Even if you are "safe", the vague sense that this level of gun violence has been brought home can creep past unsettling and disconcerting to somewhere in the neighborhood of dread; or at least it did in my case. Please take care of yourself and stay in touch with your community (virtual and real)..

Sorry for the semi-rando unsolicited internet advice. I'll go back to lurking, but seriously, take care.

I woke up and had no idea why Janie needed to be safe, no more than usual. Now I know. Jesus. The world is currently incalculable.

Rightwing America’s attitude towards guns is incomprehensible to me. It is so extremely childish and I am not talking about hunting weapons or even self defense, though the main reason for the perceived need for self defense is the number of guns around. And you don’t need an assault rifle for that.

Anyway, JanieM, I hope they catch this maniac soon.

I noticed the first attempts by rightwingers to paint the perpetrator as a Democrat.
My first prediction thus coming true.

I expect two further things:
1) claims that this is somehow Hamas related (also to the open Southern border; this latter claim has arguably already been made).
2) claims that this is another hoax by the gun grabbers to undermine the 2nd amendment.
In any case it is all Joe Biden's fault, naturally (the senile master puppeteer who's just a puppet of Obama, George Soros* and Hugo Chavez).

Why am I not in the least surprised?

*the rabidly antisemitic international Jewry must of course be behind it but that goes without saying [/sarcasm]

Today the GFS global weather model has a large hurricane hitting southern Florida from the southeast on November 10. It's a pretty low probability chunk of hell -- that far out in time the GFS seems to be one of those "predicted seven of the last two major hurricanes" models.
