"Civil asset forfeiture ... should be junked. If the original motivation still has merit, another approach is needed. One idea: make sure the jurisdiction making the seizure gets zero financial benefit from it."

Use the seized assets to fund Public Defenders.

@snarki
LOL!!! That would be an especially worthwhile step.

One idea: make sure the jurisdiction making the seizure gets zero financial benefit from it.

Some states have passed laws to that effect. But then local jurisdictions just team up with the Feds who make the seizures and then share.

It appears that Michigan State University has requested that faculty and staff, including paid graduate students, volunteer to serve food and wash dishes in the dining halls due to a severe staff shortage. I seem to recall from my days as a student carrying a full graduate load and working half time for pittance pay that extra hours for any sort of volunteer activity were few and far between.

Some states have passed laws to that effect. But then local jurisdictions just team up with the Feds who make the seizures and then share.

Voters in my state are considering an amendment to the constitution this election that blocks any agency from spending money that has not been properly appropriated by the legislature. Easy enough to do the same thing for a city or county.

Fun off-the-wall idea: a Federal law which says that, if assets are seized by the Feds in a red state, they must be given to a blue state. And vis versa.

Not implementable, of course. But a fun thought exercise.

Manchin whips out the take my vote and go Independent card.

oh well.

Manchin whips out the take my vote and go Independent card.

Pray that his tantrum does not extend to making McConnell Majority Leader.

Democracy is the least bad form of government. Gotta remember that while looking at the video linked below while realizing it probably appeals to some voters.

While citing Adam Johnson, here is an informative tweet—

I hate the horse race coverage, but I think the majority of the press especially the TV people do it this way because it doesn’t require any substantive knowledge of the issues. They can just cover politics as though everything is a high school popularity contest.

lol

Trump has started (yet another?) social media site. it's just another twitter clone running on off-the-shelf open-source software. but on Trump's special site, a comment isn't a comment. on Trump's site, a comment is a Truth.

https://twitter.com/clairenjax/status/1451021363444174850

and yes, someone already walked in off the street and claimed the "realdonaldjtrump" account.

that posted? hmm. it gave me a 503.

"on Trump's special site, a comment isn't a comment. on Trump's site, a comment is a Truth."

Or Pravda, one might call it.

Truth as in "Truth, Justice, and the American Way"? No surprise that Trump thinks of himself as Superman.

Trump has started (yet another?) social media site.

FAIL.

The claim is that the service is provided using Mastodon, which is released under the AGPLv3. Absent additional licensing terms, the only requirements are making the source code and any modifications available under the same terms. It is unlikely, at least at this point, that Trump's partners have been modifying the base software. Even if so, his partners are far from the first to have violated the license terms. (Eg, IIRC, Google was years late in releasing their Linux changes for Android.)

It is unlikely, at least at this point, that Trump's partners have been modifying the base software.

Mastodon founder Eugen Rochko told TPM in an email that TRUTH appeared to violate the terms of use that the software sets forth: making the source code available, and having a copy of the general product license available to users.

You say nothing there, Rochko says maybe there is. You guys go fight it out.

Even if so, his partners are far from the first to have violated the license terms.

So many entitled @ssholes, so little time.

I stand by my statement.

I'll amend my previous comment:

Rochko says it looks like there is.

And I'll continue to stand by my statement.

Also, too...

Lock him up.

The utter contempt shown for small-r republican governance by Trump and his entourage is a cancer at the heart of the nation. Lock them all up. They should be grateful not to be hung as traitors.

This crap will continue until there are consequences. Which is to say, until they pay a steep personal price. We keep saying we need to "help the nation heal", meanwhile the nation is dying because we don't have the grit to name this crap for what it is and deal with it as such.

It's a cancer. Cut it out. Excise it, root and branch. Lock them up.

I'll stand by that one, too.

You say nothing there...

No, I say that there are dozens/hundreds/thousands of companies, from small to the largest of the large, that go for years in violation of the requirement to post source. Feel free to say that you hold Trump's partners to higher standards than Google, or Microsoft, or Apple. Just realize that's what you're saying.

Trump and his inner circle have had contempt for Congress for years. Bannon has just taken it to the next level: criminal contempt. But there will likely be others scrambling to match him.

I just hope the AG comes thru with filing charges.

Just realize that's what you're saying.

Actually, what I’m saying is that it’s almost comically in character that Trump’s crew would violate the terms of use.

He’s a crook. He attracts crooks. He and his entourage are incapable of doing anything without cheating. If it was actually easier to not cheat, he’d still cheat. It’s what he does. Honesty and simple human integrity are foreign countries to him, they are qualities he despises and sees as weakness.

The fact that Google, MS, Apple, et al, are also crooked in their use of other people’s work does not surprise me in the least, nor does it justify the behavior of Trump’s crew or undermine my point above.

obviously the GPL's "What If He Did It First" clause needs to be considered here.

It's 2021 in America and conservative movement self-dealing subhuman dog shit floats to the top and it's all bankable for the vermin scum destroying the country:

Trump cashes in on fascism and corporate America, fascism's little willing helper, the luckiest legal excuse for being fake untaxed people ever, masturbates into the public water supply.

Those connected to Hitler in the early 1930s cashed in on the jackboot and truncheon concessions too.

Manchin and Simena got a big taste of that SPAC spike too, I'm quite certain.

EVIL.

Time grows short.

Is this thing still on?.

Yes, the friday open thread I had, I left on draft instead of scheduled. Sorry about that.
