Thought I would open another thread, this time centered around Pope Francis' recent homily, in which he gave the blessing in the title, explained by this wikipedia page.
The Urbi et Orbi address and blessing is the most solemn form of blessing in the Catholic Church, and is reserved for the most solemn occasions. These occasions include Easter, Christmas, and the proclamation of a newly elected pope concluding a conclave.
And CoVID-19.
The text is here, an explanation is here.
Just to be clear, I'm not Catholic and when asked, I say I was raised Christian. I balk at the missionary impulse in the homily, but find some of the ideas and discussion worth considering. So, another thread that is for all intents and purposes open, but I would be very interested in what others think about what the Pope said.
John Prine is critically ill with the virus.
I was moved by parts of the address, esp the parts about the interconnectedness of people and the heroism of the individuals that will never get famous.
My own reaction is bitterness and rage. it seems to me that this virus has thrown into high relief the fecklessness of Trump supporters. HOw dare they fail to be outraged when Pres Pussygrabber demeans Dem governors and denies supplies? And why the hell aren't the outraged that the Republican stimulus packet incuded millions to be handed out by PRES.PUSSYGRABBER in secret for six months? WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THOSE PEOPLE? Sorry, but...it just seems that there is no low to low for TRUmp to go and no low for at lest forty four percent of the population to go down with him.

WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THOSE PEOPLE?
They have listened for several decades to those they believe they should respect, religious and/or political leaders in particular, telling them that others were vile, dangerous, evil, etc. In short, not really human beings in any meaningful sense. Not surprising that they have internalized it.
It worked with race for a very long time. And only really broke down significantly, over race, when the military was integrated, and the draft meant men from everywhere, of every race, spent years rubbing elbows and depending on men from other places and races. In many ways, the biggest loss the nation suffered with Viet Nam was the loss of the draft, and the national integration it forced.
Now, in a lot of places, it's all too easy to never have any significant first-hand interactions with anyone different. So those there have no need to confront facts which differ from their stereotypes.

This Issac Chotnier interview with Richard Epstein, via LGM needs to be read to be believed.

I must disagree. I've read it (OK, I could get all the way thru), and I still find it unbelievable. Is it really possible to live in such a complete bubble that reality can't get thru ideology?
Posted by: wj | March 30, 2020 at 01:13 AM
lol. Well, logically, what I wrote is still correct, in that while it is impossible to believe me if I just told you what an idiot Epstein is, and after reading the article, you might believe me (or you might not)
Or maybe I could be just channelling Epstein's inability to admit he was wrong.....

Insert inappropriate joke about Epstein-Barr (or better Burr in this context?) virus.

cleek, you've been posting some of my favourite songs at your place: St James Infirmary and Fever, and actually White Room although not an actual fave belongs very much to my youth - Cream album was I think the second album I ever bought. And I Love Rock and Roll, a wonderful evocation of youth, like Teenage Kicks. Thank you!

Listening to that hatemonering shit was a choice. Believing it was a choice. Ironic that so many of the people who chose to hate "the Other" claim to be Christian.

cleek,
Point taken. Although it does require being able to hire enough syncophants to buffer you from interacting with reality. Not that many people with that level of funds.
