We have one open thread, but I thought one unpolluted by American issues might be nice and, since the World Cup has no US team, well, there you go. I won't explain much, cause if you like soccer/football, you probably know, if you don't, you probably aren't interested. I like soccer, but I didn't grow up with it, so I'd certainly be interested in people who are more knowledgeable about the sport. But my own observations:
-The sport really kicks my rooting for the underdog into warp. Was happy that Germany lost and Argentina as well. Felt a little bad for Ronaldo, I think he always comes off badly when compared with Messi for a lot of reasons that don't relate to ability.
-I have a rooting interest in Japan, but was really disappointed by the last 15 minutes of the Poland-Japan match.
-If I understand this correctly, one huge difference between soccer and the American big three (baseball, football and basketball) is that for the latter, there are times that the team can stop and get their bearings. I'd love to think that if the Japanese team could have had a huddle, they might have said 'do we really want to advance this way?' and decided no. Probably not, but it seems like there is less opportunity to reset and restrategize
-I'm liking the VAR, and I hope that using it more and more is going to stop players from faking these dives, which for me is the worst thing about the sport
-on the other hand, and comparing it to the American big three, soccer has resisted technology. Why that is, I have a few ideas, but wondering what others may think
Anyway, another open thread, have at it.
