In the comment section of a silly review on Slate, I read a serious comment to the effect, "I've never seen LOTR or read the books, but this is so culturally pervasive I feel I should."

I was introduced to Tolkien by my older sister when I was in junior high, in 1963. It was like finding a door to another world that no one around me had discovered. It's hard to imagine the experience of someone who feels obliged to participate because everyone else is. It's like visiting the Lascaux cave because of all the hot dog stands around the entrance.
