20+ years ago, I wanted my folks to meet the woman who would become mrs lj (I was on the west coast, they were in South Mississippi) and my mom said How about Las Vegas and I came to learn that the Hawaii side of my family, a few years earlier, had a family reunion and while both my mom and dad were dubious, they had a great time there, and had gone back a couple of times and now felt like this was a good place to meet my soon to be blushing bride, which was really interesting to explain to her.
We got there and the first thing my mom said we had to do was to hit the buffet, I realized that the whole enterprise was set up to hit some special notes, specifically to go back to the time when my folks were kids, food was a luxury, and the idea of unlimited food was unimaginable.
Move up to a few years ago, and casinos had sprouted up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and the headliners were folks like Pat Benatar, Heart, Bachman Turner Overdrive iirc and I thought, ok, I am now my folks. Or at least the next target demographic in the barrel.
Anyway, now, I'm back in South Mississippi, and Maroon 5 is going to be here for something, and I'm watching the Time-Life Greatest Rock Ballads, and in the middle of Air Supply and the big hair and REO Speedwagon (in fact, one of folks pitching the collection is REO lead singer Kevin Cronin) is Extreme's More than Words and I realize that what separates my demographic from my folks is that we can't admit we are old, so the way to bait our hook is to make us feel like we are trendy, keeping up with the young-uns. Kinda sad.
I'm of the impression that there are a number of folks here are in that same target demographic, so if you are, defend us (or not), and if you aren't, make fun of us mercilessly.
