Or...

I can haz Shakezpere?

This blog loses Hilzoy and replaces her with Lindsay Beyerstein, who posts crap like this. And people wonder why this blog is losing readers.

No one can replace Hilzoy. Beyerstein has replaced her (if that).

Pitchfork and cheezeburger, guys, really? This seems like a case of "if you don't have something to post, don't post."

Great.

The Obsidian Wings Entertainment Supplement.

Publius on Music.

Beyerstein on Food.

What next, an Eric Martin Film Review, and Von reporting on Fall Shoe Styles?

Any chance of getting Martha Stewart to post on Thanksgiving Table Settings, as that holiday is fast approaching?

And can someone please post current Traffic Conditions on the 405 because I have an appointment in Santa Monica this morning with a political Tarot reader who's going to prognosticate troop allocations to Afghanistan, and the CBO evaluation of the Finance Committee marks on the health care bill -- Oh, sorry -- that's all off-topic..

So, wow, didn't Brett Favre kick ass last night?

jeez, tough crowd today.

wanna just call it an open thread?

I like a bit of whimsy now and then--so much more entertaining than a page after page of dreary political opinions.

I think some folks are just mad cause their lips moved while reading the title to this post.

Wtf is this? Definitely not what I come to this site for...

I'm sorry, but this is really lame. Is Lindsay even trying to contribute anything? This makes me miss Hilzoy.

What, Jay Jermoe, mocing Lindsay for advocating the murder of innocent cows to make cheesburgers?

It's called an open thread. You might have noticed that we have those from time to time at ObWi, if you've been here before. You don't need to discuss the crab.

And OCSteve thought my dark side was coming through at OBWI!

Hello and my best to you Steve, by the way. Life is O.K. but different. Thanks for asking. Blood pressure steady. What about yours?

If Gary Farber was here, he would show me how to link to a good half-dozen whimsical Hilzoy posts (one had to do with bras) over the years.

So Lindsay's crab has good precedent.

What, did you think Hilzoy was all ethics all the time?

Hey, you know what totally roolz? Unsolicited wankery from trolls and newbies who apparently have never heard of an open thread. Awareness of all internet traditions. We can has them.

Regardless, am sure the Kitty will give the critics the respect and consideration they deserve (and by that I mean "ignore the douchebaggery and keep posting whatever the fnck they want, whenever the fnck they want.")

A bill legalizing same-sex marriage in the District of Columbia was introduced in the DC Council less than an hour ago. Ten of the 13 council members are not merely sponsors but introducers.

Now we just have to hope that Congress is distracted enough by the real work they have to do that they can manage not to meddle in DC's local affairs. Fortunately there's no equivalent to the NRA on this issue -- Democrats can mostly ignore the Christianist groups and their proposed amendments.

Heh. Indeed.

Nice pic, Lindsay!

ok, open thread.

so over the weekend I play a benefit for habitat for humanity with a jazz trio. no $$$, but good players who are friends of mine and it's a good cause, so no problem.

the folks who catered the event got lots of beer donated, so they sent us home with a free case of beer, each. sweet!

monday I get a call from my physician who wants to discuss the lab results from my last physical. slightly elevated liver enzymes, nothing alarming, but they want to test again -- so, no alcohol for a month or two.

so now I have a lovely case of Sam Boston Lager chilling away in the basement fridge that I can't drink any of.

dag nab it.

I love the picture -- and yes, we do sometimes have open threads here. Especially when we're all wrapped up with other stuff. Thanks, though, to peeps for pointing that out.

I wish ObWi had more open threads - not the multiples-per-day they do at Balloon Juice, but something more like the rolled-over open thread they do at Making Light, that is refreshed every week or so. A link from the front page to the current open thread helps there too.

I think people are just crabby (heh heh) because they haven't had any politics threads to argue on in the last few days. They're jonesing for fresh meat - although one of the things I like about ObWi is that the front page posters don't post about every scrap of news that comes by, but only when they have something to say.

We are off to Alta Bates in Berkeley right now to try to get this 38-week baby turned over. His head is currently happily jammed into the top of my wife's belly. RONG WAY BABY. So, there's supposed to be about 2/3 odds they can turn him, otherwise we have to schedule a C-section, as they don't do breech deliveries at Alta Bates. Either way will be okay but obviously we're hoping for success today...

Well, enjoy your open thread. I don't see anything really interesting here. It's worth noting that, as of the time this was posted, no one had posted a substantive thread in five days.

Yeah, but just think how good it's going to taste after a couple months of abstinence. (And it'll still be plenty fresh kept in those conditions.)

So, there's supposed to be about 2/3 odds they can turn him, otherwise we have to schedule a C-section, as they don't do breech deliveries at Alta Bates.

We tried that with my second child, who was breech. They managed to get her head to go down, but her feet didn't go up. She was bent over, which made the C-section tough because they had to pull her out by her butt. The doctors were grunting with exertion and my wife was being yanked all over the place. I'm sure I was getting pale, given the way I felt.

Well, best of luck to you and the missus, JD.

Sounds like someone needs to start his own blog.

oh grow up.

Yes, how dare the Hive Mind leave poor (Chris) hanging for 5 whole days!!1

BTW, Who the hell are you, again? I mean, you've demonstratively (and somewhat rudely) expressed your dismay several times now re: how ObWi has completely gone down the shitter since Hil's departure, yet seem unaware that, as John pointed out, she herself used to post pithy, insubstantial posts on many an occasion.

I for one don't recall having the pleasure of seeing your handle appear in comments during her tenure, though it's certainly possible that your highly valuable (if whingy) contributions managed to slip under the radar.

I can haz closed bold tag? THX

Matt, who the hell are you? The white knight of obsidian wings? Like it's your job to make sure no one says anything negative about this blog. I wasn't the only one complaining about this post, either.

And you act like your this old school commenter who's been here forever--calling people "newbies" and shit--when you don't have any posts here before November of last year.

Lay off Lindsay people. She's probably busy, and there are worse things in the world than an open thread. If you're jonesing for an argument go bother the people at Balloon Juice or something.

Chris -- to defend matt, I don't really understand the hostility. I mean, it's fine to criticize -- you have to get used to that pretty quick in this business.

But we're all amateur bloggers -- we all have day jobs. I appreciate you coming here, and hope that you'll continue.

But we simply cannot keep up the pace of people who blog for a living. Pure amateurs who blog completely outside of professional responsibility are getting more rare, and I think it distorts the baselines of expectations.

Sometimes, the real world intrudes. We do the best we can with that. If anything, I would think posts like these are especially appropriate when it's gone silent for a while and people want to talk.

Could someone please explain what happened to Gary? Hope he's not gone like Hilzoy. I remeber, back in late August, some people were asking why he wasn't a front-pager yet. Then I get internet back a bit over a month later and he's gone?

Fair enough, publius. The time you took off here to write that brief was well worth it--good job.

Chris: Matt, who the hell are you?

Mattt. You missed out the middle t.

Who the hell are you, brackets unlimited? Since you've brought the topic up, and it's an open thread, let's all discuss you. Are you:

The drug-dealing lady of magic
The retro stalker of innocents
The sewer-dwelling genetically-engineered collector
The unemotional cybernetic conqueror
The diabolic science thief

(From the invaluable seventh sanctum)

I like the description of Matttbastard as the White Knight of Obsidian Wings - it has style. If we're going for a chess theme, I want to be the Black Bishop. ;-)

antrumf,

I was asking about that the other day. Janie M posted this Gary quote from August:

...For a long time I've been neglecting my own blog in favor of commenting here, because I appreciate the interaction, but in both cases, the relatively low profile is starting to wear me down. For a very long time I'm investing a huge amount of time in what boils down to doing research for other people that mostly disappears down the memory hole, and is read by only a small fraction of the number of people who read front page posts at more prominent blogs than my own.

I'm strongly thinking about trying to find some group blog with a higher profile, since it's clear that in the contemporary blogging environment, a one-person non-niche blog such as my own is immensely unlikely to ever develop the kind of larger regular readership that, frankly, I'd like to find. If I can find one that's congenial, it'll probably mean cutting back my participation here. Of course, it's an open question if anyone will have me.

(Theoretically I could go back to Winds of Change, where they once invited me to be the house liberal, but I eventually found the context too frustrating, and desire to find a group blog where I'd be a better fit.)

So it doesn't look good.

italics, be gone.

BTW, I befriended Gary on Facebook. I know it's not the same as reading his highly informative comments here, but it's an easy way to get in touch if you're interested. He did mention the ObWi front-page position, but I don't want to divulge more than that on his behalf.

I'm with Matttbastard. Fuck this (Chris) guy. Nice parenthesis faggot. Yeah, this post sucks. So what? You're even worse.

Italics, be gone.

Irrumator,

I'm a fan of Lindsay, and I agree on substance, but you shouldn't be using language like that.

I can certainly relate on the hurdles of engaging on a blog as an amateur -- wanting to find the time to get into discussions, but always with work, life, and whatnot getting in the way...

Though I stand by my previous statement of support for the kitten.

I don't see anything really interesting here.

And you're not helping.

Brackets: And you act like your this old school commenter who's been here forever--calling people "newbies" and shit--when you don't have any posts here before November of last year.

Your google-fu is weak, grasshoppa.

Jes: that's Half-White Knight(Off-White?)

Chris, you should definitely file suit for a full refund.

Jeez! What a bunch of WFTB's!

With regards to Gary, I see where he had a post on his blog yesterday that was linked by both Andrew Sullivan and Digby. Yes, Farber has hit the big time!

I also seem to recall that he was really getting fed up with TypePad.

It's just sad that this stupid mispelled nonsense is what libtards find funny.

This whole thread is just a big jerkoff.

TinyURL'd goatpr0n and HTML vandalism in 3, 2...

(Chris), we all understand you dislike this thread. Fine. If you don't like it, don't comment here.

Pericles, I'm pretty sure Lindsay's misspellings were intentional. You, however, can't spell "misspell."

Mattt, why would you encourage that?

Farber has hit the big time!

It's about damn time!

Not "encouraging" anything. Rather, flagging what I suspected might have been another dispatch from the house spoofer.

I could of course be wrong.

It's called an open thread. You might have noticed that we have those from time to time at ObWi, if you've been here before.

Usually they're labeled as such. And I have had no problem with them. This wasn't labeled as an open thread, just an odd picture with a caption that didn't make much sense to me, even in LOLspeak. (I'm probably not aware of ALL Internet traditions, but I am aware of many.)

I'm not complaining about Lindsay or publius -- both have posted essays I've admired. It was two "weak sauce" posts in a row, and the second fairly slap-dash for ObWi.

I don't think I'm being a whiner for stating my disappointment.

Ay Dios Mio....open threads can be a beautiful thing. Like TNC's place over at Atlantic. I didn't think a picture of a crab could really make people so crabby. Seriously.

One of hilzoy's early posts was a picture of a deep-sea crab. So Lindsay is in good company, there.

Look for yourselves, if you don't believe me.
