But we don't do nearly enough to try to prevent them from becoming crises in the first place. Nor do we have any decent way of trying to help failed states get back on their feet -- which matters, since failed states are the natural homes of terrorists.

just for perspective: this $750B bailout of the financial industry that has so angered so-called conservatives is barely a single year of our total military spending.

Just as interventionist as always -- maybe more so -- but with diplomats and aid workers rather than troops? Should make spying much easier and more productive.

If we're going to be massively interventionist, then I guess this is preferable to bases. But something tells me it will supplement rather than replace deployments.

Will watch with interest.
