Well, if the situation is sooo bad, then nobody can expect that the US withdraw their forces. Somebody has to stay to prevent a bloodbath [/preemptive sarcasm]

Anybody want to tell us agains what a success the Surge (TM) has been?

I expect we'll just continue to hear how well the Surge Is Working, at least until November, and any consciousness of unpleasant complications will be relegated to the back pages of newspapers or to liberal blogs.

On a related note, I was struck by the prominent photographs of injured Georgian refugees in our teevee news and their suffering, compared to the great paucity of any such consciousness concerning Iraqi civilians and what they've suffered at our hands.

OT:
Hey, I've got a question for you foreign policy watchers of the skies types:

It is with regards to the Georgia/Russia fiasco taking place right now and the fact that we now have warships close to the Georgian ports that Russia ostensibly controls.

Do you think there is anyway this confrontation has been rigged by the neocons and the Bush-Cheney team for an event during the Dem convention as a so-called August surprise?

I know that seems crazy and beyond the pale as it were; namely to try to engineer geopolitical events so as to influence domestic events like elections, but look what they have done in the past that we might have thought was unthinkable; terror alerts, arrests being announced at opportune times years after the arrest happened, etc...

is there any way there is any truth to this?

Thanks.

Um, like having Cindy Lou McCain captured by Russian terrorists while doing good works or something?

You're saying Bush is basically hoping for 3 things:
1) Permanent bases;
2) Oil deals;
3) Integrating (pacifying) the Sunnis.

Instead of the above, could it be as simple as he just wants to kick this can down the road to the next poor sucker, so he can walk away feeling good about himself? With the Awakenings and the Surge he may be doubling down yet again, but he has bought himself some time; perhaps enough to not be in office when everything blows up.

Well, October/August surprises with countries such as Iraq and Iran are one thing, but I seriously doubt the Bush team would play that game with Russia.

Yeah, in a sense, that's the upside of the plan: Even if it's crap, and doomed to failure, it will still likely create a pause long enough to push it on his successor.

Even if it's crap, and doomed to failure, it will still likely create a pause long enough to push it on his successor.

But it gets better than that: because the current state of affairs is unstable, when the whole thing does explode, guess whose fault it will be? Obama's! After all, violence was down toward the end of Bush's term but picked up after Obama took office, so clearly the problem was Obama's poor leadership. Did you know Iraq in August 2008 was like the Biblical Eden in its perfection? If not, don't worry, the republicans and their media fluffers will remind you continuously in about six months.

So who was it again that said that the Awakening was part of a COIN strategy?

Since it fails on almost any criteria it obviously wasn't.

I'm new to the blog, so maybe I'm missing something that everyone else knows. You said "shout out" "Large Professor," and "the Extra P" in one post. I sense a secret pop culture code switcher here! Someone knows their golden era hip hop! ; ) Illmatic or Main Source Xtra P? ; )

Welcome, Mantis, and you are correct about Eric's propensity to work music lyrics and titles into his posts. He really likes it when someone correctly points out the reference. So have at it.

Mantis: Main Source.

Off the Brand New Heavies album.

Um, rather, that would be a Diamond D reference from Stunts, Blunts and Hip Hope (great record; song was "Freestylin"). Man, I gotta lay off the booze on weeknights.
