Whatever else goes horribly wrong in the world, the fact that we can see pictures of elephants developing in the womb is an astonishing thing. I can't imagine how I came to be so lucky as to live at a time when pictures like these are so much as possible:
This last one is apparently eighteen inches long. Imagine.
Aren't they cute?

The Elephant Poem
by Wayne Hepburn
Elephants are lovely guys,
They're good and true and tell no lies.
They don't take more than they can eat,
And always watch where they put their feet.
They don't play with electric wires;
I never have heard of them starting fires.
They live healthily, they don't smoke
An Elephant is a kindly bloke.
Elephants take care of their young,
And rarely speak with angry tongue.
When in school, they do not cheat,
They walk in lines which are quite neat.
They don't beat up on smaller folks,
Don't care if they're the butt of jokes.
They don't fret, what to wear today,
Look simply splendid all in gray.
Super strong yet very nice,
They're really not afraid of mice.
I've tried and tried but I just can't
Find anything better than the Elephant.

Now, is that an elephant, or the next Buddha.

Clara & Xander loved LOVED the baby elephant pix & the dolphin in utero / birthing... the were agape, astonished & delighted. Thanks, for that, hil & happy Thanksgiving to you too, kid.
You can't imagine how much pleasure your writing has given me this past year.

The ultrasounds are wonderfull, what a beautifull teaser!
Since this is an open thread... One of the Dutch blogs I read linked to the 'democray index'(pdf) the Economist published.
Before exporting the product you might want to improve the model you use at home...

I caught about 30 seconds of an animal show on TV, in which they showed a mother bear and her cubs, at 400 lb and 8 lb respectively. I automatically translated to human dimensions, of course, and wondered what the world would be like if adults ordinarily weighed 50 times as much as infants.

CNN.com's current headline (above a picture of some Iraqis): "OUT OF CONTROL"

We're getting there.
I imagine a lot of you got a little closer just last night, in fact.

Man, that poor lady. She must have been so upset when she saw that ultrasound. Do they know how it got in there?

We're getting there.
Thank God I stopped before the wafer-thin mint.

I find it fascinating, as well as immensely sad, that the time between developing this technology, and the extinction of the elephant, will be so short.

On Redstate, not one diary or main-page post about the doings in Iraq. Not -one-. And it's been like that for weeks.

Not true... they had that "debate" a couple of weeks ago where they all fought to see who could blame the Democrats more for the situation in Iraq.

As if by magic, Pejman at Redstate just put up a post about Iraq:

I've been to his site. Matthew Yglesias used to comment there.

Since this is an open thread... Anybody here who has IRL contact with Gary? He hasn't been online for 5 days now, which is long for Gary. Doesn't answer his email either... Which worries me, him being rather ill.
Posted by: dutchmarbel | November 25, 2006 at 08:27 PM
I've been thinking about Gary, too.

Something has snapped in Iraq. Looks like the serious bloodletting may be about to begin. Militias all over the capital are loading their weapons and getting into position, and Sadr's militia took over the state-controlled TV station yesterday and issued a call to arms. Certain neighborhoods were identified as targets.
This looks very bad.

The LA times just called it civil war. But I'm sure the real problem is all the media reporting. Right? It's the media that drives the reality, right? Oh, and the liberals who didn't clap hard enough.
ARGH!

A reference to "Beater" Pan(WPE)?
Posted by: Andrelas | November 26, 2006 at 07:38 PM
The LA Times also has this to say:
Posted by: Slartibartfast | November 26, 2006 at 07:44 PM
That's not the LA Times, that's Jonathan Chait, whose columns appear simultaneously in both the LA Times and the New Republic.
