Sean: we try, somewhat futilely, not to use profanity, partly because some of us read this at work, and we don't want the site to be blocked by evil filters. Also, it helps with the whole civility thing.

Interesting discussion. I have been grappling with some of these issues my self.

Speaking of sexual harassment (wasn’t really harassment but I am groping for a segue…) A colleague of mine was trying to “make time” with a (much) younger woman. One tactic he used was to offer to send her resume around in hopes of finding a job. Her email stated, in part:” I hope the political stuff doesn’t scare people off. I’m a Republican you know.”

I was really troubled by this matter-of-fact identification with a political party. Kind of like I might say I’m left-handed you know or I’m a Roman Catholic or I’m a Minnesotan.

Recently my wife said “you’re a Democrat”. Inwardly I bristled. I don’t self-identify as a Democrat. I’m a me – I’m unique. Truth be told for the past 10-12 years I have voted straight Democratic tickets. I will do so next month also..

When I was younger I was a ticket splitter – although I leaned toward Democrats, I still voted for Republicans about 40% of the time. Durenburger, Frenzel, Arnie Carlson and Boy King’s father are just some Republicans I voted for. Like Mr. Farber I too voted for and worked for John Anderson in 1980.

Now it is not so much that I am a Democrat as I find them weak and ineffectual as I am an ardent anti-Republican. To be honest I loathe and despise Republicans. I want to see them lose so they and their minions suffer. I want to see Hinderaker mewling and whining (is that any different than today?), and Malkin in an internment camp and Limbaugh behind bars for a drug offense. I want to see them all unhappy and frustrated.

All I have to ward off the evil hordes of Republicans are the Democrats and how sad is that? Relying on Democrats to protect me is kind of like bringing spaghetti to a knife fight.

People may, with some justification, look at me as a pathetic wretch for allowing the misdeeds of miscreants upset me so. I am allowing the R’s to control me. It is what I am struggling with. Why do I hate them so? I have no pithy revelatory answer yet but I believe it started when I began listening to Limbaugh back in the late 80’s . The spectacular mendacity, the arrogance and the sheer hatred of liberals fascinated me like a car accident.

Anyway still trying to figure things out. If I were God for a day (Don’t worry I’d be a benevolent and loving God) I would abolish political parties.

Would I vote agains a corrupt Dem? You bet I would. Wouldn't think twice. More importantly I bet $100 that in this day and age, if the Dems held power for a period of time, they'd look a lot like the current GOP.

Depending on how long "a period of time" is, I'd take that action in a heartbeat.

Point taken, Hilzoy.

Didn't mean to offend -- I thought the two colorful words I used are rated PG.

I submit that Andrew was poking his finger in the eye of Democrats by tarring them as people who want to give away money to the shiftless poor, always love higher taxes and hate business.

That's not an honest position even if Andrew asserted it in a civil manner.

As a hard working Democrat who earns a high income by working with and for business leaders, I found his post offensive.

Anarch: Depending on how long "a period of time" is, I'd take that action in a heartbeat

Sad but true. I can see it happening to Labour, who have now been in power for nine years. Way too long in British politics. The Conservatives, who were in power for the 18 years preceding, were in power for a long way past way too long and have still not recovered.

Anarch, Dave,

Since I see almost no substantial difference between the two parties and the complex factors that affect “corruption” are poorly addressed, deeply entrenched, and impact both Reps and Dems, how about we say the period of time is four years, providing victories in November and ’08? What are the conditions?

Sean: "That's not an honest position even if Andrew asserted it in a civil manner."

Accusing someone of dishonesty is not civil, no matter how you assert it.

And speaking of which, this from kid bitzer is also in violation of the posting rules:

"That's part of why I find it so annoying to read lies like this from Andrew:"

This is not funny. It is not pleasant. Any further accusations of dishonesty not backed up by (a) proof that what the person said was wrong, plus (b) proof that it was not a mistake of the kind that we all make, will be banned.

This is a very good article, thanks for acknowledging certain issues that were left unanswer. Continue your good work
