Senator Kerry will be accepting the nomination at the Democratic convention after all, thus rescuing it from a fate... not much different than it would have been anyway. It's not like either party's is going to be particularly surprising, tasteful and/or memorable.
Then again, 'surprising' and 'memorable' may not be all that positive conditions. As somebody or other once said, adventure is somebody else in deep trouble, far away. I'm sure that Terry would like nothing better than to bring off a nice, safe, boring convention...
I am older than most of you. I was born the day after Trinity. For those whose favorite subject was not history, Trinity was the name given to the first atom bomb test on July 16, 1945. The scientists of the Manhattan Project were nervous they might burn up the atmosphere; naming the bomb after God gave them a rather blasphemous sense of security.
I became obsessed with JFK in 1956, just as I turned eleven. I have been following presidential elections for 48 years. Fundraising isn't everything. The JFK cmpaign welcomed my services at 15, although my only income was my 50 cents an hour Saturday night babysitting job.
Eugene McCarthy's and Bobby Kennedy's success in convincing LBJ not to runfor re-election wasn't about raising the most money. It was about capturing the most mind, hearts, imaginations.
John Kerry never seems to feel financially secure. Most of us manage to pay our bills without one heir/heiress, never mind two.
The best things in a campaign--people's time, energy, enthusiasm--are free if the candidate is a principled, courageous visionary.

The link seems to be broken, Jane Austen. I keep getting this error message:
Can't open file: 'eb_blog.MYI'. (errno: 145)

That's happening throughout eBloggy, Moe; seems to be a problem with the server, rather than with Ms. Austen's link/blog itself.
