I'm sorry, but the US does presume to know what is best for everyone(Iraq, Pakistan Afghanistan etc) and most definitely does presume to decide the outcome of elections(Gaza).

obama follows lincoln, even in striving to disenthrall.

"The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise -- with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country."

if there was ever a country in thrall to a dogmatic past, it is israel. and it must think anew. it can only be helped by our thinking anew, too.

[...] This is most true on Israeli/Palestinian issues: whenever I see, for instance, Israeli and Palestinian commentators on TV engaged in what is described as "debate", I can predict in advance what each side will say, and normally have to force myself not to switch the channel in annoyance.

However well it starts, it almost inevitably devolves into finger-pointing -- 'how can you discuss this topic without mentioning awful thing X, which your side did?' 'But X is actually completely legitimate, unlike even more awful thing Y, which your side did, and which you have predictably failed to mention', etc., etc., etc.

Same for the I/P comment threads here. I can script all the regulars' responses, step-by-step, in advance. It's extremely tiresome.

As the Holy Koran tells us,

Whoa, now that's a risky thing for a secret Muslim to blurt out*. Ol' Sean Hannity must be slipping, concentrating on trying to turn Obama into a sympathizer with the 9/11 hijackers with a clumsy clipped quote, when there was such gold to be had. Oh, well, I imagine they'll pick it up and flog it to death sometime soon. Regardless, can't wait for my father's phone call tomorrow night, ranting about that Muslim's apology to the terrorists, his abandonment of Israel, and his fluency in Arabic.

Which is a shame, given that the real thing was pretty good as speeches go. Well, that's Fox News for you.

*Yes, this is sarcasm.

We know. You mentioned it before. Several times in fact.

mds, try here for just one sampler of fine ranting insanity.

There's plenty more where that came from. What's remarkable is that one of the Powerline guys said it was a good speech. To be sure, another immediately objected. But you know Obama is driving the crazies nutty when the Powerline guys look moderate in comparison.

You're going to have to try harder than that to pamroll me.

But you know Obama is driving the crazies nutty when the Powerline guys look moderate in comparison.

Crazies? Um, I wasn't kidding about my father's take. Still, if the shoe fits, throw it at a Democratic president, as he'd probably say.
