Not yet, at least. I hope to be back by next week, dishing out my unique brand of von-justice to all comers. Moreover, it'll be a new and improved von, finally in sync with the Administration. But I can't be the only center-righty ready to come home to roost. I mean, who could dislike the Dubai ports deal? And who would be against handing out "Gold Cards" to recent immigrants?
Really? The entire U.S. electorate?
That hurts, man.
(Who the hell came up with the idea of calling Guest Worker ID cards "Gold Cards"? Is it possible to play into the stereotype any further? Why not call the program: "Instant Credit For Illegals"?
(Are they even trying up there?)

Open wide, ObWingians: here comes that open thread you've been hungerin' for!

Born on the same day as Da'?
How'd you (or, more properly, Mrs. Von) manage that?
Posted by: CaseyL | March 08, 2006 at 05:39 PM
In the posting, not baby-making, department that is.

Once we found the DeLerean, it was a snap.

"I'm reliably informed is me"
Somebody said, "Trust but verify".
All or rather most kidding aside, congrats to you and Mrs v. Looking forward to good advice here about car seats and co-sleepers and Pack n' Goen.

Too late I take it for "Calvon"...

Congrats. Valentines Day.
I thought about sending you an email on VD, because I was in Chicago, looking for a place to eat. Obviously, you would've been well occupied.
Do you happen to know where the massacre took place?
Posted by: CharleyCarp | March 08, 2006 at 06:54 PM
Two words, von. Baby posts.
Congrats.

According to Wikipedia, which is NEVER wrong, the Massacre took place at the garage of the S-M-C Cartage Co. 2122 North Clark Street, but the garage was demolished in 1967.
In 1981 or 1982, while visiting Chicago, I ate a Big Salad at a restaurant which was supposedly across the street from the massacre. This salad contained lettuce, onions, and dressing, and nothing else. But it was huge. It cost $9, a lot of money to pay for a salad back then, especially one distinguished only by its size. I didn't begin eating pizza until 1986, more's the pity.
I don't know the name of the Big Salad restaurant, or if it still exists. But get the deep dish pizza anyway.

Bet they didn't get many kangaroos in there.

Congratulations, Von. Mine is scheduled to arrive on the ides of March. Unless he decides to cooperate and turn head down between now and then.

I can't do better than Wikipedia.
As for restaurants: The places I'd recommend would be a short hop (west) from downtown. (Nb, I haven't lived in Chicago for three-plus years.) Cafe Absinthe, corner of Milwaukee/North/Damen is a reliable standout (enter through the ally) and very reasonably priced. Spring, which is nearby on Damen, is excellent but more. Downtown, Tru is even more excellent but even more expensive. There was a fantastic French place on Halstead and Armitage (Linclon park area), but it's now closed, unfortunately. There also used to be a great Columbian place west of Damen on Division, but I don't know if it's still around.
Congrats, Gromit.

Congratulations with your son, Von.
Experience tells me that the new you might be very busy, tired and in need of more sleep for a while but I applaud the intent of more postings :)

Once, while visting Chicago, I ate a big bowl of soba noodles at a noodle shop called, plainly enough, The Big Bowl. Good noodles.
And who would be against handing out "Gold Cards" to recent immigrants?
Who would be? Especially if George W. shaved his head and started working "Who loves ya, baby?" into his remarks?

Congratulations. One piece of advice on sleep: you and Mrs Von don't have to both be up when the baby's up. One of you stay up with baby while the other naps. Also sleep when the baby sleeps, no matter when that happens to be. (OK, that was two pieces of advice, but really they're both useful.)

Also sleep when the baby sleeps, no matter when that happens to be.
Unfortunately the first weeks that tends to be 5 minutes of every 10 or so :)
