Better late than never: Phil Dennison's discussion of Dizzy City's Metro system is spot-on. I've had to deal with it for over two years now, and let me tell you: I miss the NYC subway system. Better hours of service, more cars, not notably more likely to break down, more likely to find a train that stopped near where I wanted to go, certainly cheaper; I never had a personal safety problem while using the NYC subway, so that common point is moot in my book. True, the DC Metro is much less likely to vaguely reek of urine, which balances the scales for some people. That's their call, but I can live with a background smell of pee in exchange for a proper subway system.
Just saying, that's all.

I haven't been to DC in years so correct me if i am wrong. The NYC subways systems best feature is the 4 track system. One local and one express track each direction, something which i believe is only found in New York. The DC subway system is so much newer that a NYC type system is cost prohibitive. I prefer the DC metros asthetics. The NYC subway has its charm but nothing compared to the high ceilings and colum free stations of the DC metro.

Let's face it, though, if Metro implemented an express train system, there would be utter chaos for a few months until people adjusted. Granted, it would sort itself out, but I honestly think that DC Metro officials would feel that that month or two of inconvenience (to a handful) would justify never implementing the thing.
